Collaborative Midmarket Leadership Panel: Reducing Complexity

At the Spring Midmarket CIO Forum, we will tackle IT complexity head on, finding out what is working, not working and why in the fight to reduce organizational, process and technology complexity. We will hear from a panel of leaders and will also collect and share experiences and ideas from audience members.

Most companies have amassed a burdensome amount of technical debt because of things like accumulated cost associated with deferred system refreshes, replacement or integration, and from software developed with suboptimal code for reasons of expediency. This severely limits IT’s ability to innovate, complicates migration to new tools, and makes it less responsive to customer and business needs.

According to the Key Issues Study on which we collaborated with Hackett Research Group , 24% of all technology spending in 2020 will be allocated to reducing the debt – that is, retiring, consolidating or replacing systems. High complexity in terms of number of applications per end user drive up total IT cost 38% and number of IT FTEs by 15%. Complexity hurts stakeholder functions as well. For example, in finance, high application complexity inflates costs by 151% and FTEs 186%, compared to finance functions with low complexity levels.
